How To Run MetaTrader 4 On A Mac

I’ve been asked many times about the possibility to run the MetaTrader 4 trading platform on a Mac. While it’s not impossible the solutions that are available do come with a number of pros and cons. Let’s take a look at some of the available options…

Option #1

You have the option of using virtual machine software (like VirtualBox, VMWare Fusion, BootCamp or Parallels) and/or making a windows partition in which case you would need to start the Mac in native Windows mode. It’s like having a regular Windows machine.

The virtual machine solution has a cost (you have to buy the software) and requires a fast machine (with a good amount of RAM) for running the software smoothly.

Also, as you are installing the Windows OS from scratch, you will also need a Microsoft Windows license and the installation disk. The advantage is that you’ll run both Windows and Apple OS at the same time so you can work with both operating systems at the same time.

You can find the software mentioned in this part here:

Option #2

The second solution is creating a Windows HD partition and then install Windows on it. This has more or less the same pros/cons of the solution above but you will be running only one operative system at the time (so you basically choose to boot with either Windows or the Mac OS) but it uses all the resources so option tends to provide better performance. You’ll need a Windows OS license and installation disk for this solution as well.

Option #3

The third solution in reality is my personal preference and while it can be slightly more technical, it can be a lot easier than going through the process of obtaining a Windows licence and configuring any of the previously mentioned software.

This option uses a free/open source piece of software known as “Wine”. Wine lets you run Windows software on other operating systems. With Wine, you can install and run these applications just like you would on Windows.

The good news is that you don’t need to install the Windows OS on your PC (saving HD space, resources and money as you won’t need any Windows License). The bad news is that it doesn’t always work with all applications as some are quite sophisticated to work with it.

But, the good news is that there is support for the MetaTrader 4 platform and the steps required to get your platform running are quite simple.

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Download Wine/Winebottler from here:
2. Copy Wine (Winebottler is optional) to your Application folder.
3. Download an MT4 installer or copy an MT4 folder to your Mac.
4. Return to Wine and run ‘terminal.exe’

That’s all there is to it 🙂

Wine will allow you to run MT4 with nearly everything working the way it should. Only a very few and minor functions have been known to throw up some issues in certain cases. For instance, push notification, news and sometimes audio have been troublesome.
