How To Use MetaTrader 4 Profiles

MT4 comes with many great features that allows traders to trade multiple rading strategies on the same platform. One of these features is the Profiles feature which allows a trader to easily switch between different trading strategies.

Profiles can be handy as they can be used to save your settings so that the next time you open the platform you can continue trading with your saved layout.

What is a MetaTrader 4 Profile?

An MT4 profile is a saved group of charts and indicators that you saved with predefined and configured settings. You may have particular set of indicators on a couple of different charts and the charts may be arranged in a particular order. If you want to have the same charts retrieved with the same settings and charts at a later time. You can save these settings as a profile and you can pull it up at a later stage but don’t cofuse this with regular templates…

What’s the difference between a template and a profile?

Templates are used to save indicators and settings for a single chart. If you want to apply particular settings to any chart you can save it as a template and you can apply it to any chart.

A profile is a group of charts that can be saved with different settings and you can retrieve all these charts with the same settings preloaded on your charts whenever you want.

How to creating and save MT4 Profiles

One thing to remember is that you need to run your MT4 platform as administrator especially if you are using a Windows 7 system. To accomplish this simply right click on the MT4 application and click the ‘Run as administrator’ option.

Next you simply need to open up your charts and set them up with the indicators that you want. I personally prefer to keep my different trading systems separate from each other so if I am trading system XYZ, I will open up the currency pairs I want to trade with this system, then apply the system XYZ template to each of the open charts. Next, I simply arrange the windows to suit my preferences.

To save them as a profile so that I can open up this system later, I simply click on File then go to Profiles and click Save As on the menu bar. Next you will be prompted to give a name to the profile. Simply type out the name and click Ok. Voila! Your profile is saved.

Important tip to avoid losing data!

One important thing you have to remember is that if you make any changes on the opened profile like adding more indicators or changing the indicator settings, the changes will be automatically saved to your opened profile. So if you want to keep the same settings of the profile, don’t make any changes on the opened profile. Open a different profile and make any changes you want.
